There are different junction boxes for different purposes, and chances are that the junction box holding your light fixture isn't fit for a ceiling fan. That might be because it's made of plastic, or it could just be a less expensive junction box that wasn't meant to support a tremendous amount of weight.

Old work boxes normally have a flange on the front edge to stop the box from dropping thru the wall and some sort of a flipout wing on the back to grab the drywall. Second, is this box round or rectangular? Rectangular boxes have a 6 lb weight limit.

- Very good mic for the money. Use in conference room that seats 12 - 16 people. Picks up voice from every corner of room. Would be nice if it had a standard tripod thread instead of the proprietary one on the little stand, but if you have some fab skills you can make it work. I mounted mine on the ceiling and ran a 20' usb extension. Works great.

The code will address the maximum weight allowed on a ceiling light fixture box and a ceiling fan box, but not the ceiling light fixture or ceiling fan itself. This is because the ceiling light fixture or ceiling fan may be supported independently of the junction box it is mounted through.
